چکیده

Abstract A new methodology/data structure, the clause tree, is developed for automated reasoning based on resolution in first order logic. A clause tree T on a set S of clauses is a 4-tuple , where N is a set of nodes, divided into clause nodes and atom nodes, E is a set of edges, each of which joins a clause node to an atom node, L is a labeling of N ∪ E which assigns to each clause node a clause of S, to each atom node an instance of an atom of some clause of S, and to each edge either + or −. The edge joining a clause node to an atom node is labeled by the sign of the corresponding literal in the clause. A resolution is represented by unifying two atom nodes of different clause trees which represent complementary literals. The merge of two identical literals is represented by placing the path joining the two corresponding atom nodes into the set M of chosen merge paths. The tail of the merge path becomes a closed leaf, while the head remains an open leaf which can be resolved on. The clause cl(T) that T represents, is the set of literals corresponding to the labels of the open leaves modified by the signs of the incident edges. The fundamental purpose of a clause tree T is to show that cl(T) can be derived from S using resolution.

A Resolution Calculus for Recursive Clause Sets [Preprint]

Proof schemata provide an alternative formalism for proofs containing an inductive argument, which allow an extension of Herbrand’s theorem and thus, the construction of Herbrand sequents and expansion trees. Existing proof transformation methods for proof schemata rely on constructing a recursive resolution refutation, a task which is highly non-trivial. An automated method for constructing su...

Non-Clausal Reasoning with Definite Theories

In this paper we propose a general-purpose first-order automated reasoning framework based on the notion of a definite formula and on a non-clausal variant of SLD-resolution. This framework provides a universal Horn clause-like representation of knowledge for classical as well as a range of non-classical first-order logics. It provides a resolution-style method for automated reasoning with theo...

Relative clause attachment ambiguity resolution in Persian

The present study seeks to find the way Persian native speakers resolve relative clause attachment ambiguities in sentences containing a complex NP of the type NP of NP followed by a relative clause (RC). Previous off-line studies have found a preference for high attachment in the present study, an on-line technique was used to help identify the nature of this process. Persian speakers were pre...

α-Resolution Method for Lattice-valued Horn Generalized Clauses in Lattice-valued Propositional Logic Systems

In this paper, an α-resolution method for a set of lattice-valued Horn generalized clauses is established in lattice-valued propositional logic systemL P(X) based on lattice implication algebra. Firstly, the notions of lattice-valued Horn generalized clause, normal lattice-valued Horn generalized clause and unit latticevalued Horn generalized clause are given in L P(X). Then, the α-resolution o...
